Learning Blog 1 – Spring Term – w/c – 2nd March 2020

There has been lots of exciting learning happening at Nelson this week. Here is an overview of some of the learning in each year group.

Orchard Class

We have been writing recounts about our weekend activities.

We have been learning subtraction by putting animals on an island, and taking some off. We then found out how many were left. We were signing and talking the calculation.

We have been learning to add by finding two animals, counting the legs finding the numicon tile, and then counting the numicon tile holes to see how many legs altogether.

We have been looking for signs of spring: daffodils, crocuses, frogs, frog spawn….and climbing trees without having to wear a coat!

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes this week. We have been ordering and grouping the shapes.

Year 1

We have travelled to Holland, found out about windmills, tulips, canals. After a long night on the ferry, had ‘hagelslag’ (sprinkles on toast) for breakfast.

We have looked at work of Van Gogh, painted tulips and daffodils in the style of his sunflowers.

We have also played lots of games to practise solving problems involving subtraction.

Year 2

We visited Strangers Hall on Friday to continue our learning about the Great Fire of London. We learnt about different materials and how to make sure that your house was safe from fire. We hunted for fire hazards around the hall, including the bedrooms! Finally, we spent heard from people who were living in London during the time of the fire.

Year 2 – Autumn 2nd Half Term so far!

In year 2 we have started this half term with some exciting learning activities. We have been making fires and creating charcoal. The children then cooked toast on the fires and created their own drawings using the charcoal.

In English we have been reading The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield. We have been using drama and story mapping to remember the story and we are now about to start to write out own stories.

Finally – In science we have been exploring solids, liquids and gases and their properties. We have looked at how they are all different and how they behave when we apply different forces to them! Here are some pictures of our experiments.

Stars of the week – 15th November 2019

This week we have seen some amazing learning taking place around the school and there was a great selection of children in our star of the week assembly! We were also greeted by some amazing outfits in aid of Children in Need. We are still counting the monies and will let you know how much we raised next week!

Well done everyone!

Year 2 – Reading Café – Autumn Term

Today we held our first reading café in Year 2. We shared the book ‘Don’t look in this book’ by Samuel Langley – Swain.

We asked questions about what was happening in the different parts of the story and we then set about completing two different activities. Children and adults were given the chance to complete different endings to the story starters given in the book.

Children were also able to create their own character puppets using sticks and card! We saw some amazing designs and creations by the children and adults.

We are looking forward to our next learning café which will be just before we break up for the Christmas holiday. Date to be confirmed after half term.

Thank you all for coming and for your valuable feedback.
