The Governing Body of Nelson Infant School has 11 Governors. The Headteacher is a Governor and there is one further staff governor. The Governing Body is made up of representatives of the Parents, Staff, Local Authority and Co-opted Governors.
The School Governors are:
- Victoria McConnell - (Headteacher)
- Paul Wickens, Vice Chair of Governors (Co-opted Governor)
- Jacqui Mackay (Co-opted Governor)
- Andrea Mearing (Co-opted Governor)
We are supported by a LA Clerk to the Governors – Natalie Lee
The Governing Body is the accountable body for the school and is responsible for all decisions made, but it delegates operational matters to the Head Teacher and Leadership Team. In accordance with the Government’s requirements for all Governing Boards, the three core functions of the Board at Nelson Infant School are:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic vision;
- Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure the money is well spent.
The full Governing Body (FGB) meets eight times a year. Three times in the Autumn Term, twice in the Spring Term and three times in the Summer Term. We also have committees that meet if required to consider performance management, staff matters and pupil discipline.
Governors visit the school regularly, attending events and undertaking learning walks in order to effectively monitor the quality of learning at Nelson Infant School.
A Declaration of Pecuniary or Personal Interests is signed annually by every Governor. At every FGB meeting, there is a space on the agenda for any declaration of interests that arise over the year.
Governors also regularly review and agree School Policies. We consider a number of key policies each year, including Behaviour Management and Safeguarding. Each year Governors consider Attendance. Parents and Carers will know that, since 2013, legislation has meant schools cannot authorise term time holidays. Governors recognise the challenge this may cause some families but good attendance is vital to improved learning outcomes. The progress and achievement of pupils across the school is monitored termly.
Minutes of FGB meetings are public documents, and can be requested for viewing via the school office. Governors attendance is recorded at all meetings - attendance at Full Governing Body Meetings from September 2016 is as follows:
- Rachel Barker – 10/10
- Kerensa Healy – 9/10
- Alex Knight – 10/10
- Jacqui Mackay – 7/10
- Andrea Mearing – 8/10
- Helen Ryan – 9/10
- Paul Wickens – 10/10
- Sheila Wigg – 10/10
- Marc Wiseman 9/10
Full Governing Body Meeting Dates for the year are agreed at the last meeting of the summer term.
