Statement From Governors

Annual Governance Statement for the Governing Body of Nelson Infant School
September 2016

In accordance with the Government’s requirement for all governing bodies, the 3 core strategic functions of Nelson Infant School Governing Body are:

1.      Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

2.      Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

3.      Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

 Governance Arrangements

The Governing Body of Nelson Infant School was re-constituted in January 2015 is now made up of 2 staff governors (including the Headteacher), 3 elected Parent Governors, l Local Authority Governor and 5 Co-opted governors. Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body and are people who, in the opinion of the Governing Body have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

On our Governing Body the co-opted governors include one staff member, one parent, one member of the local community, one with an educational background and one with a safeguarding background.

The full Governing Body meets twice a term and we have two committees who also meet twice a term. The committee structure is one Strategic and Curriculum and the other is People, Buildings and Money. We also have committees who meet when required to consider staff appointments, performance management, appeals and exclusions.

Attendance record of Governors

Governors have an excellent attendance at meetings and we have not had to cancel a meeting because it was not ‘quorate’ (the number of governors needed to ensure that  legal decisions can be made). Individual governor attendance is recorded at the top of governor minutes which can be viewed on the school website.

The work we have done on our committees and in the governing body

The governing body has had a busy year, focusing on school improvement and ensuring the recruitment of high quality staff. This has included the appointment of a new Headteacher – Rachel Barker who will take up post in January 2017.

The Strategic and Curriculum Committee has spent time reviewing school data and pupil progress. This includes a review of the Pupil Premium and how it is spent within school and what impact this has on achievement and progress.

The People, Buildings and Money (PBM) Committee looks at the maintenance and development of the school premises (including the swimming pool). This year the committee has agreed expenditure on the three new cloakrooms. Our Health and Safety Governor carries out regular checks of the premises with the site manager.

Governors have a statutory role in seeing all Safeguarding procedures are in place and we have a nominated Governor for Safeguarding who reports to the governing body.

Early in the Summer Term the PBM Committee approved the 2016/17 budget plan: we are pleased to report that the school is in a healthy financial position.

One of the roles of the governing body is reviewing and agreeing School Policies and this year we have considered a number of key policies, including Behaviour, Safeguarding, Pay, Finance and Health and Safety. We also annually review school attendance to ensure it is in line with government legislation.

Minutes of the Full Governing Body Meetings are public documents – you can either find them in the Governor Section of the school website or ask at the office for a copy of out meetings.

 Future Plans for the Governors

The Governing Body is looking forward to welcoming our new Headteacher to the role and we know she has plans to develop teaching and learning, the curriculum and resources. We will keep you informed of changes as the year progresses.

We are also looking to further improve the safety of the school site.

How you can contact the Governing Body

We always welcome suggestions, feedback and ideas from parents/carers – please contact the Chair of Governors – Sheila Wigg – via the School Office. You can see the full list of Governors; their attendance at meetings; minutes of the full governing body meetings on the school website.  More information on each governor is due to be added to the website in the Governor Section and on a Governor Board in the entrance to the school from 2017.
